PETA's ARBOL DE FUEGO: From Aegis to Chekhov!

February 3, 2015

QUEZON CITY, Philippines – After the chart-topping success of the Philippine Educational Theater Association’s (PETA) OPM comedy musical Rak of Aegis, PETA brings new life to Anton Chekhov’s timeless world classic The Cherry Orchard in its new play Arbol de Fuego.

From Rak of Aegis’ flooded subdivision of Barangay Venizia, PETA’s Black Box Theater will be transformed into a failing hacienda in the sugar lands of Negros, patterned after the failing orchards of the Russian landed gentry in The Cherry Orchard. If Rak of Aegis was a comedy musical of popular jukebox hits that tickled the audience’s fancy for the familiar, Arbol De Fuego is what we call a ‘dramedy’: a bittersweet comedy-drama about a family’s struggle against the shifting social order of the changing times.

Deviating from the usual serious and melodramatic staging of Cherry Orchard, PETA’s adaptation is told with underlying sarcasm and humor that Chekhov had originally intended for the play.

“Chekhov is a dramatist known for farce. People usually think of this dark, sad, serious play because that was how director Stanislavski staged it. It’s very literary, but it’s really a comedy,” shares writer Rody Vera.

Arbol de Fuego laughs at the habits and tendencies of the diminishing aristocratic class as it focuses on the self-indulgences and obsession with material wealth of the rich. Like Rak of Aegis, the play also illustrates the plight of the working class, their struggles, and tribulations.

Another play where the plot stems from domestic troubles, Arbol de Fuego tells the story of an aristocratic family on the eve of an impending foreclosure of their estate. The protagonist, Enriquetta Jardeleza-Sofronio, returns to the family estate to face the prospect of impending bankruptcy and losing their land with its beloved rows of flame trees, or what is locally known as arbol de fuego. Fortunately, a former servant’s son, now a successful property developer, has a cunning plan to save the estate.

Arbol de Fuego has the makings of another promising theater hit like Rak of Aegis. The play combines the power of a world classic with a band of notable theater talents: multi-awarded director-designer Loy Arcenas, prolific playwright Rody and sought-after composer and musical director Vincent de Jesus.

Arbol de Fuego also boasts of a stellar cast. The brilliant acting ensemble is led by seasoned actress Cherie Gil, who plays the role of Enriquetta Jardeleza-Sofronio. Alongside Gil is Urian best actress awardee Angeli Bayani who plays Charito, Enriquetta’s adopted daughter who takes care of the estate while they are away. British Independent Film Award nominee Jake Macapagal plays Enriquetta’s ostentatious brother Adjie, while 2013 Cinema One Best Actress Anna Luna plays Enriquetta’s naïve and optimistic daughter . Joining them is money-grubbing former nobleman Chitong played by well-known actor, director and set designer Leo Rialp; Self-made businessman and former servant Nonoy Tiking played by Raffy Tejada; young intellectual Dante played by Riki Benedicto; and old but faithful mayordomo Manoy Iking played by Bembol Roco. A host of talented actors round off the cast as the family’s hired servants played by Anthony Falcon, Lao Rodriguez, Gie Onida, Kiki Baento, and Divine Aucina.

With a dose of farce and a dash of drama, Arbol de Fuego is sure to be an astounding acting piece and a feast for the senses; a truly Filipino production that should not be missed! The play opens on February 20, 2015 with shows from Fridays to Sundays, 3:00pm and 8:00pm at the PETA Theater Center, No. 5 Eymard Drive, New Manila, Quezon City. For show buying and ticket information, contact PETA at 725 6244 or 0917 5765400 or contact Ticket World at ticketworld.com.ph 891-9999.

Ateneo Fine Arts stages CLYTEMNESTRA

February 3, 2015

As part of Playhouse: Fine Arts Festival 2015, the Ateneo Fine Arts presents Clytemnestra, a one-woman show performed by Missy Maramara. This production, which was staged in New York last November 2014 for the United Solo Theater Festival, is adapted and directed by Kiara Pipino.

Clytemnestra is a modern look at the classical depiction of a woman scorned. A woman condemned by a jury of men, Clytemnestra faces the consequences of redeeming her honor by killing the man she loved. The juxtaposition of classic and modern explores themes of redemption in betrayal, courage in nightmares, and triumph in tragedy.

Writers and playwrights of all times have told Clytemnestra's story and each one of them revealed something new, unexpected, and compelling about her. Clytemnestra is Agamemnon's wife and the queen of Argos and Mycenae. When her sister, Helen, is brought to Troy, the infamous Trojan War begins. Agamemnon sails for Troy to help his brother Menelaos win Helen back -- but only after Agamemnon sacrifices his own daughter to secure the Greeks' success at Troy.

This very sacrifice gives Clytemnestra reason to patiently wait at home for ten years: so that upon her husband's return, she exacts her revenge and settles her heart. She is strong and passionate. She has the will of a man and the charm and seductiveness of a woman. She is a force of nature. Greek Theatre has given us powerful stories, heroes and more, and this piece aims at portraying the multiple facets of a woman: wife, lover, queen, mother, and murderer through the powerful lines from Aeschylus’ Agamemnon and Marguerite Yourcenar’s Fires.

Clytemnestra will only have two shows this February 7, 2015, 5 and 8 pm, at the Fine Arts Theater, 3/F Gonzaga Hall, Ateneo de Manila University. Tickets are Php120 each. Limited seats only. For inquiries and reservations, contact John Yap at 0917-722-5399.

 *************************

“Seasons of Desire” is a story of a couple excited to start their lives together as a family. While they prepare their wedding festivities (Cinque dieci, venti – Le Nozze di Figaro), there was a reminiscence of the man searching for a maiden to be his wife (Ein Madchen oder Weibchen – Magic Flute). A call of fate happened that one rainy afternoon, he saw this lady doing her chores singing to herself (In uomini, in soldati – Cosi fan tutte). Their eyes met and the man serenades her (Deh vieni alla finestra – Don Giovanni). This encounter blossomed into a romantic entanglement. Nothing is sweeter than love. They finally got married and started their lives together they did planning on having children (Papageno/Papagena duet –Magic Flute). Soon, season of love bears fruit to a lovely daughter.

The mother died during childbirth. The season of treachery and vengeance loomed. The used to be strong man is now an old weak father. He raised the daughter on his own. She grew into a beautiful maiden. Every morning she goes to work at the Hopia de Leche Factory. The infamous owner of the factory is known for using his charm to lure women. For him, women are nothing but a bunch of toys for pleasure (Questo o quella – Rigoletto). With her innocence, she never thought that this man has an evil agenda on her. He did his sweet talks and she immediately fell for them (Signor ne principe – Rigoletto). She felt like floating in love, enchanted by his charms, his handsome physique (Caro Nome – Rigoletto).

The owner asks permission from the maiden’s father, with the intent of bribe to take her out for a day. The father, enraged by the man’s seemingly immoral character, turns him down, sends him away. His refusal pushed the owner to do something drastic.

As the day is about to end, the father went to fetch his daughter from the factory just to find out that his daughter was no longer there. Desperately he searches for his daughter fears for her safety and time is running out (Cortigiani). Suddenly the father hears a cry, calling his name. He sees a helpless maiden apparently torn of her dignity (Mio Padre…tutte le feste). The father vows vengeance as soon as he finds the mystery criminal (Si vendetta, tremenda vendetta).

The mystery man wore a mask man revealed his identity at the bar as he brags to his drinking buddies that women are easily replaceable (La donna e mobile). The father recognizes the boss of her daughter in the Hopia de Leche Factory is the mastermind. He found an opportunity to plot his revenge by knocking the man unconscious. When the man gained consciousness, he was tied up and shouts for help. The innocent maiden freed him in return he killed her. This is treachery. The father saw a dead body in the room where he locked the man never to expect it is his daughter. She apologizes to her father as she bids farewell. Her spirit will rest together with her mom. She pleaded her father to forget vengeance and just forgive (V’ho ingannato). She pleads to forgive and let go of all the anger (Addio del passato – La Traviata).

RED TURNIP THEATER CAPS OFF SECOND SEASON WITH “TIME STANDS STILL”

February 3, 2015

Fresh off the critical success of the Pulitzer Prize winner RABBIT HOLE, Red Turnip is capping off its second season with another heralded play from Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Donald Marguilles, TIME STANDS STILL.

Staying true to their promise to bring more straight plays to the metro, Red Turnip founders Ana Abad Santos, Topper Fabregas, Jenny Jamora, Cris Villonco and Rem Zamora are excited to add TIME STANDS STILL to their growing list of productions. The first season productions, COCK and CLOSER, redefined the theater experience with their biting scripts and clever, innovative staging. RABBIT HOLE’s quieter approach garnered acclaim for its stellar cast and astute direction.

TIME STANDS STILL is the story of Sarah, a photojournalist who must return home with her journalist boyfriend James after sustaining injuries from war-torn Middle East. The play follows their love story as they negotiate a more ordinary life, far from the thrills of a battleground. Yet the comforts of urban domesticity—the simple pleasures and small compromises—can be a minefield of its own. "Time Stands Still" is a blazingly important play about responsibility - to ourselves, to our loved ones, to our community, and to our world.

TIME STANDS STILL was a hit when it premiered on Broadway in 2009 and was brought back for a second run the very same year.  It also garnered two Tony nominations; Best Play and Best Performance by a Leading Actress for Laura Linney.

Ana Abad Santos and Nonie Buencamino headline the Manila premier as Sarah and James.

An Aliw Award Winner for her stalwart turn in “Mary Stuart”, Ana Abad Santos is one of the most respected actresses of her generation, having done numerous lead roles for almost all of the Manila theater companies. She graduated from LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts) and has crossed over to film and television work, most recently in the BAFTA-nominated “Metro Manila”. She is also an accomplished stage director and has received nominations and acclaim for her directorial work in “Hamlet”, “The 39 Steps” and Red Turnip’s "Closer”.

Nonie Buecamino is considered as one of Manila’s greatest leading men and character actors. He has essayed numerous roles onstage and has garnered many awards and nominations for his wide range of stage, film and television work. He is also fixture in the independent film scene and was last seen in Cinemalaya’s “Dagitab” and “K’na the Dreamweaver”, as well as Jun Lana’s “Barber’s Tales”. His most recent stage appearances include Tanghalang Pilipino’s “Stageshow”, CCP’s “Lorenzo” and in Resorts World Manila’s “King and I” as the King.

Nor Domingo and Giannina Ocampo round out the cast as the couple's longtime friend Richard and his much younger girlfriend Mandy.

Nor Domingo is an actor, director and resident member of PETA (Philippine Educational Theater Association). He was last seen in PETA's "Haring Lear" and as Fernan in the runaway hit "Rak of Aegis". He is also a Best Supporting Actor nominee for "Philippino Story" for Cinema One 2013.

Giannina Ocampo is a rising star in the theater scene after her hilarious turns in Repertory Philippines' "Leading Ladies", "Boeing Boeing" and in Resorts World Manila's "Cinderella" as the wicked stepsister Grace.

Following up his successful directorial debut in "Cock", Rem Zamora directs his second show for Red Turnip. “I'm quite excited about this one because, this time around, I will have an actual set”, he quips.  “But seriously, it’s a totally different script compared to ‘Cock’, it’s powerful because it’s so quiet.”

TIME STANDS STILL is set to open in Whitespace on January 30 and runs weekends until March 8, 2015.

Director: Rem Zamora
Lighting Design and Technical Direction: John Batallia
Set Design: Denis Lagdameo
Production and Costume Design: Marta Lovina
Music and Sound Design: Toni Muñoz
